What is Pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach that produces digestive enzymes and insulin. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (long-lasting).

Causes
  • • Gallstones: Blocking the pancreatic duct
  • • Alcohol abuse: Leading to pancreatic damage
  • • Trauma: Injury to the pancreas
  • • Autoimmune conditions: Autoimmune pancreatitis
Symptoms
  • • Severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back
  • • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • • Fever and rapid pulse
  • • Tender abdomen to touch
Diagnosis
  • • Blood Tests: Elevated pancreatic enzymes (amylase, lipase)
  • • Imaging Tests: CT scan or MRI to visualize the pancreas
  • • ERCP: To examine the pancreatic and bile ducts
Treatment
  • • Pain management with appropriate medications
  • • IV fluids and nutritional support if oral intake is not possible
  • • Treatment of underlying causes (e.g., gallstone removal, alcohol cessation)
